The release of the optically clear LS-3238 potting gel, which is designed to protect photonic and fiber optic modules from dust, moisture, thermal or mechanical shock, has been announced by Fiber Optic Center Inc. Manufactured by Lightspan LLC, the soft encapsulation material has a refractive index of 1.38 for aiding total internal reflection in silica fiber, and optical glass and plastic substrates. Its clarity enables post-cure inspection of delicate assemblies. The gel comes in self-mixing/dispensing cartridges, has a pot life of 8 h, and cures in 24 h at room temperature. Small cartridges (50 cc) are available from stock for testing and prototyping.
