Gelatin capsules for packing optical and electronic components are available from Torpac Inc. The company says the capsules are clear, strong, flexible and 100% biodegradable, and they do not emit volatile organics that can leave deposits on components during storage. Because gelatin absorbs moisture and has moisture-barrier properties, condensation is minimized. On an assembly line, a worker can open the capsule and place it over a micro-optic or small optical filter, pinch the flexible body to pick up the component and seal it with the cap. The gelatin capsules come in a two-piece cap and body with a built-in seal, and they are available in 13 sizes ranging from 0.3 to 30 ml.
