BLACKSBURG, Va., Sept. 24, 2009 – Luna Technologies, a division of Luna Innovations Inc., has announced the OVA 5000, an optical vector analyzer platform that performs loss, dispersion and polarization measurements of modern optical networking equipment. Packaged with a user-friendly interface in a small footprint, it is suitable for single-measurement, all-parameter analysis of fiber optic components and assemblies up to 150 m long. A full C- and L-band characterization of all linear optical parameters can be completed in <3 s.
A proprietary and patented technique uses swept-wavelength interferometry to accurately measure all device characteristics in real time and in the single scan of a tunable laser. The system measures the complete linear transfer function of a device under test. With this measurement, it characterizes all linear optical parameters, including insertion loss, polarization-dependent loss, group delay, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and second-order PMD. It also measures optical time domain response, complex Jones Matrix elements and optical phase response.

The device is suitable for single-connection, all-parameter characterization of fiber components such as couplers, specialty fibers, fiber Bragg gratings, arrayed waveguide gratings, free-space filters, tunable devices and amplifiers.

Wavelength range in fast mode is 1265 to 1335 nm and, in averaging mode, 1525 to 1610 nm. Standard resolution is 3.2 pm, high resolution is 1.6 pm, accuracy is ±1.5 pm, and repeatability is ±0.1 pm. Dynamic range in fast mode is 60 dB and, in averaging mode, 80 dB.

The company says that the instrument can reduce development and production costs and time to market for dense wavelength division multiplexing components by up to 60%. Because it is a single unit that fits into one rack, it saves space.
