HAMBURG, Germany, Nov. 12, 2012 — Olympus Europa Holding GmbH has launched the latest version of its Olympus Stream materials science microscopy imaging software. Olympus Stream 1.8 offers automation of a multiple-stage location engine, extended data management, new measurement options and additions to the optional Materials Solutions: “Particle Distribution,” “Porosity,” “Throwing Power” and “Phase Analysis.” They enable users to build a fully guided, or automated, system for materialographic analysis.

“Porosity” facilitates the measurement of porosity, especially in steel castings for the automotive industry. Dedicated to the manufacture of printed circuit boards, “Throwing Power” measures the distribution of copper plating thickness. “Particle Distribution” creates particle distribution histograms according to the size, shape and color values of particles, while “Phase Analysis” allows users to perform simultaneous analysis of multiple regions of interest.

There are three new measurement tools for calculation of asymmetries, throat thickness and multiple distances. The user can obtain fast results for weld measurement.

Available as part of Olympus Stream Motion, the new “Stage Path” function integrates stage control into the work flow of many Materials Solutions. This step-by-step wizard allows a motorized stage and Z-drive to be automated, enabling definition of a complete work flow inside the stage path, with the option to assign several scan areas per sample. Multiple samples can be queued, with numerous scan areas, and the stage paths can be stored and retrieved as required.

New options in data management are integrated. “Stream Document Storage” has many filters and free text search, and it saves images automatically. The optional “Workgroup Database” offers a structured data system that enables simultaneous access by up to five users, while the optional “Enterprise Database” for large working groups supports unlimited users.
