HAMBURG, Germany, July 27, 2011 — Olympus Europa Holding GmbH has introduced its Olympus Stream software for optimizing industrial analysis using a microscope. Built-in instant extended focal imaging (EFI) and manual multiple image alignment (MIA) functions expand the range of imaging possibilities while simplifying and speeding up the process.

The EFI function is suitable for rapid investigation of thick samples with complex, irregular shapes, quickly creating a clear image that is fully focused. The MIA function creates panoramic images of large samples, meaning that users are no longer limited by their field of view. Via a simple, step-by-step process that does not require a motorized stage, the feature can stitch together an unlimited number of snapshots on-the-fly and in real time during a single round of acquisition as the user moves around the sample. The user does not have to decide the order or number of images to be combined in advance. Images are captured manually and stitched together to form the resulting panorama.

Using the Olympus Stream 1.6 instant EFI function, it is possible to create a clear image in which the entire sample surface is in focus, allowing users to rapidly examine the sample in question. The user moves manually through the Z-axis, while the system captures only in-focus areas at each focal position. These are then combined to provide the final image, ready for further investigation. The system does not require any advanced motorization or complex automatic control, making it quick and easy to use.

The software provides flexible functionality to optimize image acquisition, measurement, archiving and automation, and it offers rapid examination and quality assurance tools for use in production processes and research and development. It integrates with all existing Olympus hardware, including microscope frames, optics, cameras and accessories.
