CRANFIELD, England, Dec. 1, 2010 — Pro-Lite Technology LLP has teamed up with German specialists CarbonVision to bring the latter company’s advanced carbon fiber breadboards to market. Structures made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic have been used in the aerospace and space industries for many years due to their low weight, high strength, good thermal stability and low resonant frequencies.

Pro-Lite now brings this advanced technology to the world of photonics with carbon fiber breadboards from CarbonVision. Four grades are offered, from the affordable EC-series to the SL-series that provides superior damping characteristics. Compared with regular steel breadboards, carbon fiber types typically weigh 75% less, size for size, exhibit 10% of the thermal expansion, possess damping coefficients that are up to 60% higher and provide a good weight-to-stiffness ratio.

The EC-Series breadboards are based upon honeycomb panels with various core materials. Stiffness and thermal stability can be adjusted by bonding additional plates made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic on the top or bottom. Typical thicknesses are 25, 50, 75 and 100 mm, and the flatness of the entire mounting surface is <70 µm. The mounting holes are M6 threads in stainless steel inserts.

The SL-Series models’ typical thickness is 5 mm. They are vacuum-compatible and suitable for use in a cleanroom. The plates are designed to meet quasi-isotropic behavior standards.

Pro-Lite offers CarbonVision breadboards in sizes from 300 × 300 up to 1200 × 2500 mm, with custom sizes built upon request.
