Fibotec Fiberoptics' optical fiber fault locator is an innovative device for spatially resolving and characterizing breaks and reflective faults in optical fibers. Like a standard optical optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR), it is based on analyzing backscatter but uses cw laser sources and allows for very high dynamic detection ranges (45 dB). The demands on test signal and on detection complexity are low, leading to a fraction of OTDR costs without limiting the fields of typical OTDR-applications. Current versions of the optical fiber fault locator are optimized for characterizing fiber links of metro network size with typical fiber lengths up to 150 km. These devices are able to locate reflective faults of all kinds, like breaks, cracks, poor connections and faulty splices at meter resolution (1-2 m depending on fiber type). The resolution is not limited by the measurement span. Due to its low cost, the fault locator can be integrated permanently for online network monitoring at an appropriate freely selectable ITU channel. It is available as a compact rack mountable module or tabletop version, both with different software interface options.
