DURHAM, N.C., Jan. 26, 2011 — Nextreme Thermal Solutions Inc. has introduced the OptoCooler HV37 module, the next product in its high-voltage line of thin-film thermoelectric coolers (TECs) designed to address photonics cooling applications with larger heat pumping requirements.

It is suited for cooling and temperature control of optoelectronic devices such as semiconductor optical amplifiers, laser diodes, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, photodetectors and LEDs, and it enables integration of thermal management capabilities directly into a package. At 85 °C, it can pump 4.5 W or 107 W/cm2 of heat in a footprint measuring 6 mm2. The device is 0.6 mm high.

At 85 °C, it can create a temperature differential (Δ-T) of up to 60 °C between its hot and cold sides, and it operates at a maximum voltage of 7.7 V, rendering it compatible with commonly found board-level currents and voltages. At 25 °C, the device can create a Δ-T of up to 50 °C with a maximum voltage of 5.9 V.

The RoHS-compliant cooler is manufactured using gold-tin solder, which enables assembly temperatures as high as 320 °C, making it compatible with industry-standard processes for packaging photonics devices that require tight tolerances.

TECs made from thin films are smaller and thinner than conventional types and can be embedded in small packages. In addition to its high heat-pumping capability, the module has a low mass, enabling a more rapid thermal response to changing temperatures for precise temperature control.
