BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Aug. 12, 2009 – The Orca-03 and Orca-05 digital CCD cameras manufactured by Hamamatsu Corp. offer high sensitivity, low noise and multipurpose versatility. These general-purpose CCD cameras are suitable for imaging in a broad range of applications including biology, materials science and machine vision.

Hamamatsu-ORCA.jpgBoth cameras contain the ER-150 CCD, a progressive-scan interline CCD chip with 1344 × 1024 pixels and no mechanical shutter. Each square pixel measures 6.45 µm per side, ensuring high-resolution imaging. In addition, the CCD has high sensitivity in the visible and near-infrared regions, making the cameras suitable for bright fluorescence and near-infrared/differential interference contrast applications. Other features include an antiblooming function.

The Orca-03 (part # C8484-03G01) is a cooled CCD camera, so long exposures up to 10 s are possible. It has an IEEE-1394 interface and produces 14.7-MHz readout at 12 bits. It operates from 8.9 fps with no binning to 43.0 fps with 8 × 8 binning. Additional features include a low readout noise of only 6 electrons rms and a wide dynamic range of 2142:1. The hermetic vacuum-sealed head can be cooled to -10 °C. The camera produces low dark current with Peltier cooling. Applications include fluorescence microscopy, metallurgical microscopy, failure analysis, semiconductor inspection and x-ray scintillator readout.

Pixel clock rate is 14.7 MHz per pixel, and exposure time is 10 µs to 10 s. The camera has an external trigger and a C-mount lens mount. It runs from a 12-VDC 2-A supply.

The Orca-05 series uncooled CCD cameras are available in two models, C8484-05C and C8484-05G01. The former has a Camera Link interface and 20-MHz readout at 12 bits. Its frame rate ranges from 12.2 fps with no binning to 68.4 fps with 8 × 8 binning. The latter model has an IEEE-1394 interface and 14.7-MHz readout at 12 bits. Its frame rate ranges from 8.9 fps with no binning to 43 fps with 8 × 8 binning. Both models have a moderate readout noise of 10 electrons rms and a wide dynamic range: 1700:1 for the former, and 1500:1 for the latter.

They are suitable for use in machine vision, metallurgical microscopy and semiconductor inspection, and they can be used as DNA chip readers and as high-throughput screening readers.

The Camera Link version of the Orca-05 offers exposure time from 4.5 µs to 1 s, while the IEEE-1394 model offers 10 µs to 1 s. Operating temperature for both is from 0 to 40 °C.
