PIEZO MOTORS New Scale Technologies Inc. has created a division to develop and manufacture miniature piezoelectric motors for use in mobile phone cameras. The Mobacam Div. will address the emerging multibillion-dollar market for autofocus and optical zoom motors for these devices. The company's piezoelectric ceramic Squiggle motors will be miniaturized to phone-camera dimensions. They use ultrasonic vibrations to produce precise bidirectional linear movement and, the company says, offer a simple design with 90% fewer parts, no gears, five times more power efficiency for longer battery life, 10 times better precision and quieter operation.
