Photon Counting Modules

OLCHING, Germany, Feb. 3, 2011 — Laser Components GmbH has expanded its COUNT series of single-photon-counting modules to include the new COUNTblue devices. These combine the low count rates of the existing modules with higher detection efficiencies at shorter wavelengths.
More than 60% of incoming photons can be detected at 405 nm, more than 65% in the green, and more than 50%, typical, in the red. The semiconductor design ensures stable count rates and zero bi-stability. The good short-wavelength performance makes the modules suitable for use in a wide variety of applications in fluorescence spectroscopy and analysis, time-resolved single-molecule detection, particle sizing, astronomy, lidar and confocal microscopy.
The new modules feature the same robust design as the existing ones and are mechanically compatible with other commercially available photon-counting modules. The optional fiber connector allows easy plug-and-play connection to the sample and effectively eliminates background light.
The modules offer high quantum efficiency, ease of use and a wide dynamic range, and they combine the company’s ultralow-noise VLok silicon avalanche photodiode with quenching and signal-processing electronics from PicoQuant GmbH. Their spectral range is from 350 to 1000 nm, and incoming photons generate corresponding electrical pulses that can be read out at the transistor-transistor logic output. The gating function disables the module between measurements to provide overload protection.
The optional FC connector links the module to the sample via a multimode optical fiber.
Features include low dark count rates, single 12-VDC-supply operation, a nominal active area diameter of 100 µm, timing resolution of 800 ps and an operating temperature from 10 to 40 °C.
