TURKU, Finland, Oct. 1, 2014 — The new Upcon upconverting nanoparticle system from Kaivogen Oy and Labrox Oy is designed to aid a number of low-background bioimaging applications.

Upconverting nanoparticle labels (UCNPs) work in concert with a dedicated microplate reader.

The UCNPs are 35-nm inorganic nanocrystals that convert near-infrared radiation to visible light and enable measurement of photoluminescence without autofluorescence and scattered excitation light.

They are doped with lanthanide ions that provide stable emission, discrete emission bands and long emission lifetime (from microseconds to milliseconds).

Applications include imaging and quantitative lateral flow assays, bioaffinity assays, sensors and even therapy.
