The PMWG-1500 Photonic Microwave Generator from Menlo Systems GmbH provides stable photonic microwave generation in a compact format.
The compact system is fitted into a mobile 19-in. rack. It constitutes the SmartComb compact and fully automated optical frequency comb and features up to 12 GHz of ultra-low phase noise microwaves. With a 5-cm long cubic ULE spacer and < -130 dBc/Hz at offset frequencies above 1 kHz, the system can be used in precision metrology, deep space navigation, telecommunications and next-generation wireless communication, as well as coherent radar.
The optical frequency of an ultrastable continuous wave laser is phase coherently transferred into the microwave range by means of an optical frequency comb. The underlying technique of optical frequency division generates microwave signals with high stability. In comparison, the phase noise of conventional electronic oscillators is several orders of magnitude larger due to their inherently high losses.
