Picosecond Pulsed Diode Lasers

BERLIN, Aug. 11, 2009 – PicoQuant GmbH has extended the number of available wavelengths of its picosecond pulsed diode lasers with the release of a laser head at 450 nm and an improved laser head at 635 nm. Both can be controlled by the established laser drivers of the PDL series.

PicoQuant-PulsedDiodeLasers.jpgThe 450-nm center wavelength model features pulse widths of <70 ps full width half maximum and an average output power of 0.7 mW at a repetition rate from single-shot to 40 MHz. Pulse widths of <300 ps full width half maximum are reached at average power of 5 mW. It is available in a dual-mode version that enables picosecond pulsed as well as continuous-wave operation with an output power of up to 10 mW.

The 635-nm version has been improved, with higher average output powers of up to 20 mW at a repetition rate from single-shot to 80 MHz. The laser head features pulse widths of <90 ps full width half maximum with average power of 3 mW at 80 MHz. Pulse widths of <300 ps full width half maximum are reached with average power of 20 mW. Output of up to 50 mW is achieved in continuous-wave operation.

Applications include bioanalytics, biochemistry, genetics, semiconductor characterization and quality control. The laser heads are suitable for exciting cyan fluorescent protein and fluorescent dyes such as ATTO 465, and they are alternatives to frequency-doubled solid-state lasers and argon-ion lasers in applications such as fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy.

The company says that, with pulse durations below 100 ps, the pulsed laser heads match the time resolution of mainstream detectors, yet at a price lower than that of mode-locked lasers. The LDH series diode laser family now covers the wavelength range from 375 to 485 nm and from 635 to 1500 nm, with a laser head at 531 nm also recently released. All laser heads are supplied with collimator optics that can optionally be fitted with optical fibers.
