PREMSTAETTEN, Austria, March 18, 2021 — The TMD2636 fully integrated proximity sensor module from ams AG is designed for True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds.

Supplied in an ultralow-profile 0.35-mm package and occupying a volume of 0.7 mm3, the sensor uses optical sensor hardware and software to provide reliable in-ear proximity detection and power savings when the earbud is not in use. The reduced size of the TMD2636 means that an earbud can now accommodate multiple proximity sensors to increase reliability or add new functionality, resulting in an improved user experience.

The module integrates a 940-nm IR Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) emitter, IR-sensing photodiodes, control circuitry, and a clear-mold overlay in a 2.0 × 1.0 × 0.35-mm package. The sensor has an average active-mode current consumption of 70 and 0.7 µA in sleep mode.
