SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 16, 2012 — Three new isolation optocouplers have been added to Avago Technologies’ R2Coupler line. The automotive optocouplers provide safe isolation for electric and hybrid/electric vehicle applications such as onboard charging systems and power train inverters.
They provide high integration of functions in modules, isolated smart gate drives, analog sensing and digital communications. Power train inverters, onboard chargers and DC/DC converters draw on gate drives for driving power devices like metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors and insulated gate bipolar transistors. They need isolation amplifiers to sense high-voltage bus levels and digital isolation to communicate status and feedback information from the high-voltage side of the optocoupler to the microprocessor on the low-voltage side.
The high-voltage, high-current switching generates a noisy environment. Optocouplers are immune to high dV/dt transient noise and to electromagnetic coupling from the high-current cables. Providing safe isolation in electric and hybrid/electric applications improves power efficiency and reduces system power loss.
Current automotive systems operate at ~400 V with future systems moving toward 700 to 800 V. The new optocouplers are rated for continuous working voltages of ±1140 V to meet future needs.
