Designed for applications such as photodynamic therapy, metrology and surface inspection, the ChiliLase high-power red laser diodes have been unveiled by Modulight Inc. They operate from 635 to 690 nm and deliver up to 2 W in a 200-μm-core optical fiber at room temperature. The company says that the lasers have a smaller footprint, greater reliability and simpler control electronics than do traditional visible laser systems. They are housed in a sealed fiber-pigtailed package that facilitates interfacing to the power supply and to the cooling systems. The company supplies the driving electronics for standard applications.
