BOZEMAN, Mont., Feb. 1, 2011 — The RHM5K-CH from Wavelength Electronics is a unipolar device that achieves precision control at off-ambient temperatures. The proportional-integral-derivative control loop drives resistive heaters or thermoelectric coolers.

Offering high stability of < 0.003 ºC, it can supply a drive current of up to 5 A and has a small footprint. Onboard 12-turn trimpots control temperature set point, proportional gain and output voltage limit, all of which are user-adjustable. A single 10-pin terminal strip provides easy access to the DC supply, sensor, resistive heater and measurement connections.

Features include single supply operation from 5 to 30 V, >27-V compliance with 30-V input (heat sinking then becomes critical, and a safe operating area tool is available to ensure that the maximum internal power dissipation of the package is not exceeded), and support for thermistors, integrated circuit sensors and resistance temperature detectors. The chassis-mount controller measures 2.1 × 2.1 × 0.8 in.

It is suited for applications where heating or cooling (not both) is required and where temperature stability is critical and space is tight, such as heated optics (noncondensing circumstances), CCDs, preheated liquids and chamber stabilization.

Fixed integrator time constant and differential term capacitors can be custom fit to specific applications to optimize temperature overshoot and stability.
