B&W Tek Inc. has introduced a Raman spectrometer that is suitable for portable analysis of biological, chemical and pharmaceutical materials. The battery-powered MiniRam collects Raman spectra from 150 to 3000 cm—1 using a 532-, 785- or 1064-nm excitation laser. It includes a sampling probe that can be used with solids or liquids, a 16-bit digitizer, a TE-cooled CCD sensor with 2048 pixels, and a plug-and-play interface that is compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0. The 8.9 x 6.4 x 3.25-in. device provides an optical resolution of ~6 to 10 cm—1 FWHM and dark noise of <80 rms at 9 ms. With the included BWSpec software, the spectrometer facilitates fluorescence spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, water pollution monitoring and molecular characterization.
