The device uses vertical scanning interferometry and phase-shifting interferometry to measure 3D surfaces with high accuracy. It can also measure surface features and roughness with subnanometer resolution. Optical profilers are used to image manufactured surface features and investigate wear, fit, leaks, vibration and friction.
