JEOL USA Inc. has announced Sirius, a control system that enables the remote operation of a transmission electron microscope via a cellular Internet connection. With an instrument control knob and a laptop computer outfitted with a cellular communications card, Sirius makes it possible to perform research on carbon nanotubes, for example, from hundreds of miles away. It also enables the microscope to be isolated from motion and temperature variations during highly sensitive operations and allows universities and research laboratories to share microscope time with students or investigators from other organizations. The system uses either an 18-Mb OC3 commercial Internet connection or a 100-Mb Internet 2 connection.
