VICTOR, N.Y., Sept. 19, 2013 — New Scale Technologies has announced the delivery of a prototype rotary piezoelectric microdrive system based on motor technology for applications in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and micro-UAVs, laser stabilization systems, microassembly, and instrument testing and calibration.
Unlike servo drives, the microdrive has no measurable jitter, holds its position without power, and generates no magnetic fields, the company says. With dimensions of 44 × 44 × 36 mm, the prototype is also smaller than a servo drive and offers higher position resolution.
The rotating stage integrates several proprietary micromotion technologies, including a high-torque, direct-drive piezoelectric motor based on the patented Squiggle motor, ball bearings with low runout and wobble, an optical encoder with zero reference mark, and drive electronics and a closed-loop control system.
