Wintriss Engineering Corp. has released the Opsis LightRanger light source, which provides an intensity of 100,000 lx at 4 ft, with a uniform 2-in. illumination line across a web. Designed for surface inspection applications, it makes hard-to-detect flaws in fast-moving materials -- such as paper, plastic and fabric -- visible to machine vision detection systems and neutralizes the effect of web bounce. Based on high-pressure sodium vapor lamp technology, the device offers 40,000 h of lamp life. The company says that optical feedback directly from the sodium lamp to the 60-kHz power supply ensures stability of incident light.
