CSEM SA, headquartered in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, has developed the SwissRanger 3-D camera that simultaneously measures the local brightness in a scene and the complete distance map of the camera's environment in real time. Based on the time-of-flight principle, the camera emits an optical signal that is modulated in amplitude with a frequency of 20 MHz and that illuminates the entire scene.

The light field, reflected by the objects and people in the scene, travels back to the camera, where the time delay is measured with high accuracy, yielding the distance information with subcentimeter resolution. Lateral resolution is 124 × 160 pixels, and the typical distance varies from a few centimeters to a few tens of meters.

The camera comprises an illumination unit, imaging optics, a near-IR bandpass filter, a sensor chip and control electronics, all on a single printed circuit board measuring 135 × 45 mm. A USB 2.0 interface provides connection to a computer.

Acquiring complete distance maps in one shot and providing high frame rates for real-time imaging at video speed, the SwissRanger is suitable for applications in entertainment, room observation, elderly care, machine vision and robotics.
