SX51 TOSA/ROSA for HD Video

PLEASANTON, Calif., April 20, 2007 -- Omron Electronic Components LLC announced today the introduction of the P1TX4C-SX51 transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA) and the P1RX4C-SX51 receiver optical subassembly (ROSA) to serve the high-definition video market.

Omron Electronic Components’ SX51 TOSA/ROSA pair is the ideal solution to addressing the long-distance data transfer challenges inherent in the bandwidth-intensive, high-speed data applications associated with HDMI rev1.3 compliant high-definition video and audio formats, the company said.

OmronSX51.jpgThe throughput of the SX51 is designed to fully support HDMI rev1.3 requirements. HDMI rev1.3 specifications allow for advanced deep-color support, which utilizes up to 16 bits per pixel, effectively providing a dynamic spectrum of colors ranging in the billions of shades, as well as for true lossless audio playback through Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio formats.

Also, the incorporation of bidirectional channels provides a level of control unique to the SX line of OSAs, the company said. This additional aspect of flexibility positions the SX51 as an attractive alternative for solutions in applications such as broadcast, in-flight entertainment or any video/data application where bidirectional communication along a common optical fiber is desirable.

“The SX51 will help video engineers address the pressing need of moving deep-color and other high-speed video protocols between boxes” said Brian Peters, president of Omron Network Products LLC, a subsidiary of Omron's Electronic Components business unit based in the Silicon Valley. “By enabling a single link that carries bidirectional communication in parallel to the high-speed data, the SX51 makes upgrading equipment to HDMI 1.3, display port, and high-definition protocols significantly easier.”

With an efficient package design measuring 10.8 W x 15.7 D x 7.9 H (mm), the Afterburner SX51 product line is a CWDM (coarse wavelength division multiplexing) -based optical subassembly (OSA) utilizing four channels, which provide a transmission (TOSA)/receiving (ROSA) bit rate of up to 3.5 Gb/s per channel, with an additional two channels for low speed bidirectional applications.

Martin Smith, Omron product manager for the SX51, said, “The SX51 is bringing advanced fiber optic capabilities to many customers who operate solely in the copper realm. By making high speed fiber solutions easier to implement, Omron is leading the way towards mass-adoption of fiber optics across the entire spectrum of video distribution customers.”

As advances in high-definition video and audio formats drive increasing demand for higher bit rates over significant distances, video system designers will realize the limitations of copper-based transmission lines and appreciate the advantages that a fiber optic-based network provides, Smith said.
