SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 4, 2010 – Coherent Inc. has expanded its Sapphire family of compact continuous-wave visible lasers with the introduction of the first 514-nm (green) offering based on proprietary optically pumped semiconductor laser technology. With a choice of four output powers ranging from 20 to 100 mW, these cost-effective Sapphire 514 LP lasers measure 125 × 70 × 34 mm and provide a reliable all-solid-state alternative to legacy ion technology at this green wavelength. All models deliver a diffraction-limited TEM00 output beam with M2 <1.1, low amplitude noise of < 0.25% rms and pointing stability of <30 µrad for ±3 °C.

For applications currently using ion lasers, the small footprint and high electrical efficiency of the Sapphire 514 LP devices facilitate and simplify integration into OEM instrumentation with their reduced physical, electrical and thermal demands. They have a total power budget of <60 W. For applications already using Sapphire LP lasers at other visible wavelengths, adding 514-nm excitation capability is simple because these lasers provide identical form, fit and function, including the same analog, RS-232 and USB interfaces.

Applications include life sciences such as flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, DNA sequencing, high-throughput drug discovery and diagnostic imaging. Others include homeland security, biohazard detection, semiconductor inspection and metrology.
