Yellow semiconductor lasers
SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 16, 2009 – Coherent Inc. has unveiled the Sapphire 561 series yellow optically pumped semiconductor lasers. Available with 50, 75, 100 or 150 mW of output power in a TEM00 beam with M2 <1.1, they produce noise of <0.25% rms from 20 Hz to 2 MHz. The company says that the devices deliver four times better electrical efficiency and lower heat dissipation than products based on legacy Nd:YAG technology. Coherent_Sapphire-561.jpg

Operating at 561 nm and measuring 125 × 70 × 34 mm, the lasers share the same compact form factor and all interface and operating characteristics as the Sapphire 488 models, which simplifies integration into existing applications. Both employ the same proven architecture, supply chain and manufacturing technology.

The devices are suitable for use in a variety of applications in the life sciences. Their high power enables faster throughput and an improved signal-to-noise ratio in flow cytometry, as well as higher frame rates and reduced exposure times in confocal microscopy. Emerging applications include proteomics and genomics.

Operating temperature is from 10 to 40 °C, and power consumption is <60 W. Beam divergence is <1.3 mrad, warm-up time is <5 min., and polarization ratio (vertical) is >100:1.
