SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 19, 2009 – Coherent Inc. has introduced a commercial all-solid-state laser with output at 568 nm. The Sapphire 568 is available in models offering 50, 75, 100, 150 and 200 mW of continuous-wave output, and it provides a stable, high quality TEM00 beam with M² <1.1 and low noise of <0.25% rms from 20 Hz to 2 MHz. It is packaged in a compact laser head that measures 125 × 70 × 34 mm, the same size as other Sapphire lasers at 561, 488 and 460 nm for the convenience of OEMs who incorporate multiple lasers.
The 568-nm wavelength, which is traditionally obtained from an ion laser, is used in a variety of bioinstrumentation applications based on fluorescence excitation. But the ion laser’s large size, low efficiency, high heat dissipation, background discharge light and limited lifetime pose practical and cost challenges to systems builders. The new device’s low power consumption of <60 W, good beam characteristics, reliability and small size make it a suitable and easy to integrate alternative for life sciences applications such as confocal microscopy and drug discovery.

Because it is wavelength-compatible with legacy ion laser technology, instrument manufacturers can use the same optics and filters employed in their existing designs. It is available with higher output power than most ion lasers, thus enabling better sensitivity, an improved signal-to-noise ratio and increased throughput speed.

Featuring an analog and digital interface, the laser offers beam asymmetry of 0.9 to 1.1, beam diameter at 1/e2 of 0.70 ±0.05 mm and beam divergence of <1.3 mrad. Pointing stability over 2 h after warm-up is <30 µrad. Long-term power stability over 2 h is <2%, and polarization ratio is >100:1, vertical. Operating voltage is from 10.8 to 15 VDC, and shock tolerance is 7 g laterally and 15 g vertically.
