PROVIDENCE, R.I., Feb. 16, 2012 — For use in blood gas monitors and other medical instruments, custom fabricated sapphire optics that are chemically inert and that operate over a wide spectrum, transmitting from the ultraviolet to 4.7 μm, are available from Meller Optics Inc.
Second only to diamond in terms of hardness, they transmit up to 85% uncoated and can be coated for >99%, depending upon thickness. Manufactured to specification, they can be fabricated in diameter sizes from ¼ to 10 in. and in thicknesses from ½ mm to 1 in., with a wide range of custom surface and edge treatments.
Impervious to low-temperature chlorine and fluorine gas, blood and most chemicals, they can be supplied as windows, flat and stepped, concave or convex, and round or square, with holes and slots. Exhibiting flatness to λ/10, parallelism to 2 arcsec and surface finishes to < 0.5 nm, they are suited for glass-to-metal sealing or brazing into Kovar sleeves.
The optics are priced according to configuration and quantity.
