Sapphire wafer carriers from Meller Optics Inc. are more durable than quartz and are impervious to polishing abrasives and solvents.

The wafers feature Moh 9 hardness, 0.018-, 2- or 6-in. diameters and &plusmin;1.2 µm thickness. They are perforated for vacuum hold-down or de-lamination, and can withstand repeated use.

They are suited for the uniform thinning of semiconductor materials such as gallium arsenide.
