Meller Optics Inc. has introduced low-order sapphire waveplates for changing the polarization state of high-power IR and visible lasers from linear to circular, and vice versa.

The waveplates feature Moh 9 hardness and antireflection coatings on both sides, allowing fabrication from 10 to 30 mm in either A- or M-plane configurations. They are resistant to chemicals, scratching, shock and temperature fluctuations, and can be made to diameters as thin as 0.4 and <25 mm.

Exhibiting 10-5 scratch-dig surface quality and ≤1 arcsec parallelism, the waveplates provide λ/4 and λ/2 retardation with tolerances of >λ/300 at 632 µm, >λ/400 at 1.06 µm and >λ/1000 at 2.94 µm.
