Scientific-Grade Lasers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 2, 2012 — Coherent Inc. has launched several higher-power versions of its Verdi G series 532-nm scientific-grade lasers, which are based on proprietary optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology.
The new Verdi G12, Verdi G15 and Verdi G18 lasers offer a choice of 12, 15 and 18 W in a redesigned laser head that measures 68 × 98 × 214 mm, or 40% the volume of previous models. They provide the same low noise, low cost of ownership and long lifetime of the earlier lower-power models. They deliver a vertically (>100:1) polarized output beam with M2 <1.1, and <0.02% total noise measured over a frequency range of 10 Hz to 100 MHz. They are backed by a two-year/10,000-h warranty, with a mean time to failure >50,000 h.
The low noise is a direct result of the OPSL technology. The short upper state lifetime of the gain medium in the lasers eliminates the “green noise” that can compromise the overall performance of multilongitudinal-mode 532-nm solid-state lasers. The thin OPSL gain medium and its efficient rear surface cooling mean that the devices do not suffer from thermal lensing, allowing the power to be varied between 10% and 100% of maximum output, with no effect on the output beam parameters.
The new lasers are intended primarily for pumping Ti:sapphire oscillators, where their increased power enables tunable, mode-locked output of more than 4 W. The 15- and 18-W models have sufficient power to optimally pump both a Ti:sapphire oscillator and a high-repetition-rate regenerative amplifier, reducing system complexity and cost.
