CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 16, 2014 — A lightweight, field-ready shortwave infrared (SWIR) module with a covert laser illuminator announced by UTC Aerospace Systems is able to lock onto the front of a commercially available, off-the-shelf camera.
The system enables imagery in both daylight and darkness with a Canon EOS 5D camera, and immediately provides operators with SWIR imaging capabilities on the battlefield. The module can image through glass, haze, smoke and dust to provide target accuracy and enhanced situational awareness with distinct advantages over goggle systems.
The 1550-nm laser illuminator mounts directly onto the Canon 5D hot shoe to deliver covert light. The device has an uncooled SU640HSX SWIR camera core with 540 x 512 pixel resolution, a 35-μm pitch and an integrated 800 x 600 SVGA display with relay optics.
