Side-Emitting Microside LEDs

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 26, 2006 -- New side-emitting Microside LEDs, with a 30-percent higher luminous intensity than the previous generation, can reduce the costs of using display backlighting and extend battery life in laptops and mobile devices, said  manufacturer Osram Opto Semiconductors. Due to advances in thin-film technology, a single LED can now produce 1.6 candelas (cds), compared to 0.9 cds, it said.

greystone_sideled.jpgIntel showed how power can be saved in laptops with a demo at Flat Panel Display (FPD) International 2007 last week in Yokohama, Japan, of a laptop using 60 Microside LEDs to backlight its 15-inch screen The display consumes just 4.4 W nd achieves a maximum luminance of approximately 220 cd/m², outperforming the higher-wattage displays equipped with cold-cathode fluorescence lamps. Osram and a team of 50 other companies are working on a project to identify and exploit potential energy savings to maximize battery life in mobile devices.

Producing the required luminance of almost 220 cd/m², these ultraefficient light sources also operate with a lower current, Opto said. Dimming the display backlighting in relation to available ambient daylight can cut costs even further, it said, and this can be done either manually or with the aid of an ambient light sensor. At 60 cd/m², consumption is reduced to 1 W.

The new Microside LED is just 0.6-mm tall, making it even more compact than its predecessor, which measures 0.8 mm. Its compact height, together with its side-beam characteristics, enables the design of low-profile displays.
