Supersic, Poco Graphite’s high-performance silicon carbide, is an ideal material for fabricating mirror substrates. Mirrors built from Supersic substrates are stiff and lightweight with high thermal conductivity for optimum performance. Silicon carbide mirror substrates are easily mated with silicon carbide optical bench structures.
Poco produces mirror substrates from 1 to 30 in. For high-energy laser mirrors, Poco produces phase change materials infused within thermally conductive foams that make efficient heat-sink substrates for mirror systems. Poco’s unique silicon carbide manufacturing method allows the complex machining of the back structure to take place in the graphite precursor; this is important because silicon carbide is very difficult and inefficient to machine. The chemical vapor conversion (CVC) process then produces a pure silicon carbide monolithic structure. To further meet performance specifications, the Supersic material system allows enhancements to the basic silicon carbide structure that include infiltrations and coatings or claddings that can be optically polished. Supersic offers exception design flexibility, rapid manufacturing and customized silicon carbide optics. Low-stress mounting fixtures mate mirrors with benches made from multiple materials. The pictured mirror has demonstrated radiation hardness, thermal stability, high stiffness, cryogenic figure stability and ease of finishing.
