The bi-directional 896-Gbps silicon photonics transceiver from Imec combines dense arrays of 56-Gbps germanium silicon electro-absorption modulators and germanium silicon waveguide photodetectors with a multi-core fiber interface. The device highlights the scalability of the iSiPP50G silicon photonics platform, paving the way for next-generation short-reach optical interconnects. 

It comprises arrays of 16 germanium silicon electro-absorption modulators and 16 germanium silicon photodetectors, implemented with a 100-µm channel pitch on a single silicon chip.
