Single-Frequency Lasers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 24, 2013 — The Mephisto family of single-frequency lasers from Coherent Inc. features linewidths of ~1 kHz over 100 ms, suitable for atom trapping and cooling, optical heterodyning, and injection locking and seeding.
The lasers are based on nonplanar ring oscillator (NPRO) technology, which contains the entire intracavity beam path within a small neodymium-doped gain crystal that is resistant to contamination, easy to stabilize, and enables thermal and piezoelectric fine-frequency tuning. The compact system requires convective cooling, minimizing noise and maximizing frequency stability, and its coherence length provides resolution and accuracy suitable for gravitational waves research and interference-based metrology applications.
Several models are available, including the basic Mephisto laser, which delivers up to 2 W of CW output at 1064 nm, and a 1319-nm version. Output powers up to 55 W at 1064 nm with similar beam properties are achieved using a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) flexible architecture that incorporates one or more amplification stages.
The Prometheus model delivers >100 mW of single-frequency CW output at 532 nm by combining the basic Mephisto oscillator with an extra-cavity doubler based on a periodically poled nonlinear crystal. The Mephisto Q provides time bandwidth-limited nanosecond pulses using an internal passive Q-switch integrated in the NPRO resonator.
