The SPD_A_M2 ultralow-noise, high-quantum-efficiency near-infrared (900 to 1700 nm) single-photon detectors are manufactured by Auréa Technology. Their Geiger-mode InGaAs avalanche photodiode and thermoelectric cooler ensure high detection efficiency, a low and stable dark count, high speed and low jitter, with a performance superior to 5 x 10–6 per nanosecond. They exhibit good sensitivity in high-level detection, making them more effective than photomultipliers and microchannel plate photomultipliers, according to the company. Most photomultipliers deliver quantum efficiency of <1% in the near-infrared, while that of the SPD_A_M2 is adjustable from 5% up to 25%. The RoHS-compliant devices provide plug-and-play connection to PCs via a USB interface. Applications include single-photon counting, time-correlated single-photon counting, fluorescence and spectroscopy.
