An X-ray Crystallography System for
Automated Molecular 3-D Structure Analysis
MADISON, Wis., Sept. 26 -- Bruker AXS Inc., a maker of x-ray systems that provide solutions for molecular and elemental analysis by x-ray crystallography, x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence, has introduced the Smart Breeze, a compact x-ray crystallography system, which features Bruker AXS' latest addition to its award-winning x-ray detectors, the air-cooled Smart Breeze 4 K CCD (charge-coupled device) detector, as well as a compact goniometer and x-ray generator. The Smart Breeze system features the new AutoStructure software for fully automatic three-dimensional structure determination of organic and coordination molecules from x-ray data.
According to the company, the Smart Breeze's advanced CCD technology allows it to be air-cooled for low maintenance while offering a level of data quality superior to most conventional water-cooled detectors. Bruker says the system, with its intuitive and automated software for structure determination, is ideal for synthetic chemistry research groups, as well as for chemistry teaching facilities.

Michael Ruf, the company's director of chemical crystallography software, stated, "X-ray crystallography has never been easier. The innovative Smart Breeze system finally opens the door to crystallographic structure determination for non-experts. We expect that easy and fast access to unambiguous structural confirmation of new compounds will have a rather significant impact on the world of synthetic chemistry."
