Konica Minolta Sensing Americas Inc. has partnered with 1426%%B&W Tek Inc. to introduce a low-cost option for LED characterization.

The thermoelectrically cooled miniature midrange spectral irradiance meter, the SpectraRad, is designed for industrial and laboratory light measurement applications. Equipped with a USB 2.0 interface and a right-angle, fiber-optically coupled cosine corrector, it is irradiance-calibrated against a NIST-traceable tungsten light source.

BWSpec software, included, provides for the characterization and measurement of many lighting devices and systems. The standard software features include timeline recording, data smoothing, illuminance (lux), chromaticity, color temperature, externally triggered pulsed light capturing and other data-handling functions.

The high-resolution and high-sensitivity CCD array irradiance meter is suitable for lamp and LED characterization, color analysis, photostability testing, photobiology and photochemistry. It offers a high dynamic range with good long-term stability and is suitable for applications including low-light-level detection and long-term monitoring.

The SpectraRad acquires hundreds of data points across the visible spectrum which, the companies say, is an advantage over filter-based instruments that acquire only three data points to yield colorimetric values. The 2048-pixel linear CCD array provides the precision required to accurately measure narrow-bandwidth light sources and LEDs. Having multiple sensors also enables the unit to report spectral data and display spectral graphs.
