BARRINGTON, N.J., April 28, 2011 — Edmund Optics Inc. has released TechSpec, germanium planoconvex (PCX) lenses that feature state-of-the-art precision diamond-turned surfaces. They are suitable for use in a variety of infrared applications, including thermal imaging, spectroscopy and remote sensing.
Germanium is a rugged, durable material with a broad transmission range from 2 to 16 µm and a high index of refraction. The material is opaque in the visible part of the spectrum and inert to air, water, alkalis and acids, except nitric acid. It has a density of 5.33 g/cm3 and a Knoop hardness of 780, nearly twice that of magnesium fluoride.
The lenses are available in 25- and 50-mm diameters. They are uncoated, feature a positive focal length ranging from 25 to 250 mm, and have one flat and one convex surface. They also are suitable for collimation and focusing applications using monochromatic illumination in defense and security.
