BARRINGTON, N.J., Sept. 24, 2012 — Edmund Optics has introduced its TechSpec Cage System linear translation assemblies. Designed for modularity and flexibility, the optomechanical systems consist of precision rods and plates, allowing the user to construct custom, adaptable optomechanical component systems with options for modification.

The assemblies add linear translation to TechSpec Optical Cage System setups and are available in simple translation, using 6-mm rods and standard plates and ball bearing translation, with ball bearing slides for low friction. The compact design is configurable for ½- or 1-in. travel, and fine translation can be achieved with the addition of a micrometer drive.

The optical cage system is suitable for creating a Michelson interferometer because, with the cage system rods supporting the structure, only minimal alignment is needed in the optics’ tip-tilt mount and in the distance between the two mirrors and the beamsplitter.

A customized digital fluorescence microscope can be built with the systems’ components, allowing the user options with simple assembly. Magnification can be modified by changing objectives, and interchangeable filter holders make swapping filters easy. Custom illumination and a spectrometer also may be added.

An autocollimator can be assembled and aligned in a few short steps. Optics can be easily swapped out, enabling the user to quickly change the field of view and resolution. A camera also may be added in place of the eyepiece for image capture or video capability.

Suitable for prototyping and demonstration applications, the optical cage systems are durable and feature tight tolerances, and good rigidity and flexibility. They guarantee smooth movement, precision alignment and accuracy.
