Coherent Inc. has unveiled a new series of yellow 561-nm lasers that produce high power and offer high efficiency. The Sapphire 561 is an optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) that offers a choice of 50, 75, 100 or 150 mW of output power in a high-quality TEM00 beam with M2 <1.1 and with noise of <0.25% rms from 20 Hz to 2 MHz.

The company says that the inherently high efficiency of the proprietary OPSL technology results in four times better electrical efficiency and lower heat dissipation than products based on legacy Nd:YAG technology can produce.

Coherent-Sapphire.jpgMeasuring 125 × 70 × 34 mm, the lasers share the same compact form factor as the company’s low-power Sapphire 488 lasers, and all other interface and operating characteristics are identical with the 488-nm wavelength model, which simplifies integration into existing applications. They also use the same proven architecture, supply chain and manufacturing technology.

Beam divergence is <1.3 mrad, pointing stability is <30 µrad, long-term power stability is <2%, warm-up time is <5 min, and vertical polarization ratio is >100:1. Operating voltage is 10.8 to 15 VDC, and power consumption is <60 W.

The lasers are well suited for a variety of applications in the life sciences. Their high power allows faster throughput and an improved signal-to-noise ratio for flow cytometry, and it enables higher frame rates and reduced exposure times in confocal microscopy. The 561-nm wavelength is also well matched to the needs of emerging applications in proteomics and genomics.
