IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 2, 2009 – Newport Corp. has announced three new additions to its 818P Series thermopile detectors: the fan-cooled 818P-500-55, the water-cooled 818P-3KW-060 and the high-sensitivity 818P-001-12NIR.

The 818P-500-55 thermopile detector can handle up to 500 W of continuous optical power (up from the company’s previous 400-W limit for a fan-cooled thermopile detector). The new device features a large 55-mm-diameter active area and very flat responses in an extended wavelength range from 0.19 to 20 µm. It offers 100-mW minimum measurable power, with 8 kW/cm2 maximum power density at 1.064 µm, continuous-wave. It has a DB15 connector with an internal electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) for storing factory calibration data.

Newport_ThermopileDetector.jpgThe 818P-3KW-060 detector can measure up to 3 kW of continuous-wave optical power. When illumination is limited to up to 5 minutes, it can handle up to 4 kW of power. Designed to perform effectively and with low sensitivity to the cooling water temperature, this model is suitable for lasers with a very high optical output power, such as CO2 lasers and fiber lasers. Output connections include an attached cable with a DB15 connector (for use with a proprietary optical power meter) and/or a USB port for direct interface without a power meter. The DB15 connector houses an internal EEPROM for storing factory calibration information. High-quality absorbers in the detector produce a high damage threshold.

The 818P-001-12NIR 12-mm-diameter thermopile optical sensor is designed to measure down to microwatt-level optical power, with a wavelength range from 0.28 to 1.36 µm. This product is insensitive to beam position and offers the spatial dependence of thermopiles, while retaining the high sensitivity available only with photodiodes. It is suitable for users working with lasers in the micro- and milliwatt ranges and for those who require a much lower thermal drift (a low of 6 µW/ºC) than standard thermopile detectors. The device is calibrated with a fused silica window mounted on the tube, so that long wavelengths of >1.36 µm can be cut out of the measurement. The sensor has a tube screwed on the detector head to reduce power fluctuations from air turbulence. It can measure continuous-wave and pulsed laser diodes, optoelectronic pulse amplifiers, gas lasers and broadband sources under 1 W. It includes a DB15 connector and internal EEPROM.

All of the thermopile sensors require annual calibration to assure NIST-traceability.
