United Lens' Thin Film CoatingsFor over 45 years ULC has been providing high-quality Thin Film Coatings for the photonics industry. We use a robotic multi-station aqueous ultrasonic cleaning system. All loading of fixtures is executed in Class 100 flow benches in a class 1,000 cleanroom. Once substrates are safely under vacuum, in-situ ion pre-cleaning completes the process of generating pristine surfaces to ensure maximum coating adhesion.

The optics, ranging in size from 1/4” to 23” are coated in cryogenically pumped, computer-controlled chambers ranging from 45” to 72”. Layer thickness is monitored and controlled using the most advanced quartz crystal microbalance instruments available. Ion sources are used to clean surfaces in-situ prior to deposition and provide ion-assist functionality during deposition as required by coating layer thickness prescription. Meissner coils are deployed in select vacuum chambers when customer needs demand the lowest water levels during the deposition process.

Spectral characterization is accomplished using Perkin Elmer Lambda 950, 1050, and Spectrum BX Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometers. Reflection measurements are performed on 950 and 1050 instruments using Perkin Elmer’s Universal Reflectance Accessory. Our spectral measurement capability extends from 0.190 to 20µm.

In- environmental testing capability includes two Cincinnati SubZero High-Low temperature and humidity chambers, and an Ascott Salt Fog chamber. Durability standards against which we routinely test and verify compliance of our coatings include:

   •  MIL-C-675C
   •  MIL-M-13508C
   •  MIL-PRF-13830

In addition to custom coatings, we offer the following standard coatings: magnesium fluoride, bare and protected aluminum, silver and gold, enhanced aluminum single wavelength, multilayer broad band anti-reflection, metal and dielectric beam splitters, Brewster polarizers, dielectric mirrors, high laser damage threshold anti-reflection and mirrors.
