PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 15, 2014 — Clear as glass, sapphire optics from Meller Optics provide durability and scratch resistance from sand, dirt and hard landings when installed on unmanned aerial vehicles.

The optics transmit from the visible through near-infrared, from 270 nm to 4.7 µm. They feature a Moh 9 hardness, second only to diamond, and can be custom-fabricated as lenses, windows and domes.

Sapphire optics are suited for use as outboard protective optics for imaging sensors.
