Ultrasonic Distance Measurement Sensors

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 3, 2009 – Sick Inc. has launched its UM30-2 line of ultrasonic distance measurement sensors that feature a new EasyTouch display and keypad that enable easy setup, configuration, quick and flexible sensor adjustment, and access to 14 advanced problem solving features without using any external PC or programming module. They are suitable for detection and distance measurement applications, such as roll diameter control, level control, clear bottle detection and collision avoidance.

Using time-of-flight measurement, the UM30-214111 model delivers resolution of 0.18 mm throughout the entire measurement range. It is insensitive to dust, dirt and fog, and color- independent, detecting even glass and clear film. Scanning range is from 350 to 5000 mm, ultrasonic frequency is 120 kHz, and maximum output current is 200 mA.

Advanced features enable users to connect multiple sensors together to act as one large sensor, which increases the sensing area for more robust collision avoidance or for monitoring difficult target surfaces. The sensors also can be connected together and programmed to multiplex to avoid crosstalk and mutual interference. Foreground and background targets can be ignored, facilitating level detection by ignoring signal reflections from the rim of the vial/bin/hopper/bottle/tube and outputting only the distance to the material inside.

Measuring 102 mm in length, the sensors run on a 9- to 30-VDC supply and consume ≤80 mA. Response time is 180 ms, switching frequency is 3 Hz, ripple is ±10%, and hysteresis is 50 mm. Standby delay is <300 ms, and operating temperature is from -25 to 70 °C. The sensors are packaged in a brass nickel-plated plastic housing.
