UV AND NEAR-IR POLARIZERS Edmund Industrial Optics has released TechSpec polarizers for the UV and the near-IR. The company says that, because the devices are made with uniformly stretched silver nanoparticles embedded in soda-lime glass, they can withstand higher temperatures and humidity, and more chemical and UV exposure than film-based versions. They can be used with lasers at power densities of 5 W/cm2 without affecting contrast. They are available with outside diameters of 12.5 or 25 mm, are 1.5 ±0.1 mm thick, operate from –50 to 400 °C and offer an acceptance angle of 20°. Polarizers with >100,000:1 contrast ratios are available for the 372- to 388-nm and the 900- to 1200-nm ranges. For 369 to 390 nm and 750 to 1400 nm, devices with >10,000:1 contrast ratios are available and, for wavelengths from 365 to 395 nm and from 650 to 1700 nm, contrast ratio is >1000:1.
