VPH volume phase holographic transmission gratings for ultrafast laser applications such as human eye surgery are available from Kaiser Optical Systems Inc. With high diffraction efficiency covering the full spectral bandwidth, the devices serve as dispersion elements that allow laser pulses to be compressed into the femtosecond regime. The gratings exhibit low loss and low scatter. Each one is encapsulated between two glass substrates that have antireflection coatings on the external surfaces. This packaging can withstand typical handling and can be cleaned with the same techniques that are used on high-quality lenses.
