SEATTLE, March 22, 2011 — Time-efficient surveys and precise measurements of larger underwater facilities, from bridge and pier substructures to smaller, submerged piping and valve assemblies, now are possible with a new underwater laser scanner, the M300UW, developed and manufactured by Newton Labs Inc. The scanner, designed to operate at a longer stand-off distance, produces a detailed point cloud that, when used with industry-standard 3-D software, can generate a fully measurable computer-aided design model of a scanned area.

The device can scan a target area measuring up to 2.80 × 2.08 m from a distance of up to 3 m, increasing efficiency and shortening completion times on large-area underwater imaging projects. The resulting accuracy of the output, after the point cloud is processed with third-party 3-D software, is up to ±0.127 mm.

The scanner, designed to operate either in air or water, can work at 0.46 m from a target surface and can be used to a depth of 100 m. It can be deployed in an articulated arm, for pole mounting, or in a remotely operated underwater vehicle or other type of robot, and it provides precise dimensioning of features, cracks, welds and other areas.

It offers a human-readable video interface on the console that displays the scanned area in real time, enabling on-site analysis and easy choice of the area to be scanned.
